Forest Hill Winery Tasting

On Saturday night we had the pleasure of tasting a great line up of wines from Great Southern producer, Forest Hill. The consistent quality of these wines more than justified the high ratings awarded by wine critic, James Halliday.  Forest Hill G.M., Guy Lyons , expertly presented the wines and gave a short history of each source block along with a description of  each wine with tips on what we should be looking for in each variety.

We began the evening with a Sauvignon Blanc which perfectly matched the accompanying bluebone kokonda served with coconut milk.  The wine was distinctly Great Southern and I thought it had great mineral characters.

We then moved to a Gewürztraminer. This wine demonstrated the full range of flavours associated with this not-so-often seen variety which is more often encountered in the Alsace Region of France. It was a treat to see this variety from Forest Hill and I thought it was a great to drink something so different from the usual. We enjoyed this wine with foie gras brioche.

Two very distinctive Rieslings were presented by Guy, one of which, Block 1, was vintaged from fifty year old vines.  These vines along with a Cabernet Sauvignon block were established by the WA Agricultural Department and were the first vines planted outside the Swan Valley. Guy was able to relate a short history of those plantings. The Block 1 lived up to its reputation and you could see why Halliday rates it so highly. Some preferred the more approachable Estate Riesling, but I thought the Block 1 was the nectar of the gods. These wines were tasted with prawn and papaya.

The Estate Chardonnay was a very attractive wine with just the right amount of oak treatment and was enjoyed with seared scallops with burnt butter and macadamia crumbs. The wine had strong citrus flavours and a great balance of fruit and acid with mineral flavours in the background.

The Malbec was blended with the Spanish variety, Tempranillo. The combination made a style of red which was quite unique and would test the best of wine variety guessers. It was an ideal wine for the petite confit duck and buttered squash pizza which was so ably served by Ian and his team from Incognito Catering.

The 2010 Block 9 was a great example of a Great Southern Shiraz. It had silky tannins and earthy blueberry flavours. My usual preference is for a more peppery style in this variety, but this is a great wine. Ashley drank a bottle. If I wasn’t driving I would have joined him. The Shiraz was served with charred lamb cassoulet tarts.

This is a legendary block of vines. The Block 5  Cabernet was planted back in the early sixties along with the Block 1 Riesling. The fruit from this block has been included in more than one famed Western Australian cab sav. The effect of vintaging dry grown vines over the breadth of Forest Hill is best expressed in this outstanding wine. The oak treatment is spot on and the cab flavours are memorable. I think this wine rates with the Jack Mann and the best of Margaret River. We enjoyed this great drop with a mini fillet mignon béarnaise.  Perfect.

The evening’s tasting was completed with a 2006 Riesling. This wine still had excellent fruit flavours and was as dry as ever. My only thought was that the international cheese selection, muscatels, quince paste and crackers could have been served with a late picked wine of this variety.

The great selection of wine from this outstanding grower and the quality of the food served by Incognito Catering, along with the luxury of Carol and Ashley’s pad made for a most memorable evening.
