Back with a BANG

Ashley Whitworth - Wednesday, February 01, 2017

Hi Fellow Rotarians,

Trust you had a great holiday break and have had your batteries recharged and are now ready for the year ahead.

I am truly excited that our International Director Vangelis has secured a coup for our first lunch back at Rotary on Friday 10th February – the Honourable Mike Nahan, WA Treasurer, as our guest speaker. Mike will be giving us his insights into the economy moving forward from the many years of our resources boom.

With the upcoming State Election on 11th March – I’m expecting lively debate and a full house – so please will you RSVP early next week when Kirstin returns to work and sends out the calendar RSVP requests.

In recognition that many of us members have not seen each other for the intervening 8 weeks since our wonderful Xmas breakfast on 16th December, we have allocated lots of time to fellowship at the lunch on 10th February – so I urge you to attend and catch up with your fellow Rotarians. We will specifically not have any inductions or lengthy announcements, but we will have full banter in our Sergeant Session – so please type up your fines to hand to the Sergeant on the day. You may also be asked by your Committee chairperson to sit with them and the rest of your committee to discuss the future plans and events that your committee will be hosting in the year.

I would also like to personally invite each of you to my President’s Cocktail Party - taking place at The Wardroom at South of Perth Yacht Club at 6.30pm on Friday 17th February (in place of the regular lunch on the day).

This is clearly another MUST ATTEND EVENT, and you will need to book ASAP through our trybooking site as we have to confirm numbers for catering a few days in advance – and obviously it will be another fun Rotary Fellowship evening  https://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=247779

The President’s Cocktail Party is going to be a very special evening in so many ways, some of the highlights will be:

  1. The unveiling of our new Club Banner, of which each attendee will be presented with a personally autographed on the night copy by the artist herself Leonie Dobrowolski, and the current President (me). This gift is only available to those who attend on the night. This gift becomes even more momentous when it is recognised that this year is the 90th Anniversary of our Club;
  2. The unveiling of the special Club painting which Leonie has created for our new offices on 5th floor of 110 William Street (a surprise which not even I have seen);
  3. The announcement by President Elect Stephen Inouye of his team for the 2017/8 Rotary Year – normally announced at Xmas Breakfast but Stephen was overseas;
  4. A Paul Harris Award to a very special Rotarian – who also was unable to attend the Xmas Breakfast;
  5. The David Reed Award – for the most outstanding Rotarian at our Club – this is the second year of the award – last year’s recipient was our Path of Hope champion Rebecca Tolstoy.
  6. Karaoke????

I am also very keen to hold a raffle on the evening at $50 per ticket for which the prize is an all expenses paid 4 hour Sundowner River Cruise on my boat FELINE for 6 couples – from South of Perth Yacht Club, down to Fishing Boat Harbour for a fresh fish and chips dinner at Kailis for all guests – all Beer, Wine, champagne and soft drinks provided, ending with a final schnapps at Elizabeth Quay (Prize valued at around $4,000). The purpose being to raise the remaining $5,000 to be added to the very generous $5k donation from Bill Hicks at the Xmas Breakfast in recognition of his 50 years at Rotary – to fund the US$7,500 required as our Club’s contribution to the joint project with the Rotary Club of Seminyak to build 5 houses for the homeless at their Tista area site (which many of us visited on our recent Bali tour). The first of many joint projects envisaged with the Seminyak Club.

But I have been advised that we need to obtain a permit from Dept of Racing, Gaming and Liquor plus at least a dozen requirements about printing, numbering, official draw date, no discounting for volume sales (like no 3 for price of 2 etc), should the raffle last longer than 24 hours. So a huge hassle for what appears a good idea but could turn out to be a painful hassle.

So instead, I would like to check with each of you if you would be prepared to purchase a ticket or two or…. On the basis of 1 ticket for $50, 3 tickets for $100 or 10 tickets for $250.

Should I get sufficient responses, and then have the knowledge that the raffle will be a success and not another tough sell – then I will get tickets printed for the night and issued to all those who have made a commitment to me in the reply to this letter.

That’s it.

Look forward to seeing all of you at our first lunch meeting on Friday 10th February and again at my President’s Cocktail Party on Friday 17th February.

Please also remember, if you have transport issues please advise me as there are a number of fellow Rotarians, including me, only too happy to pick you up before the event and safely deliver you home after.

Yours in Rotary

Larry Hirsch, President - Rotary Club of Perth 2016/17
