Four Way Test Speaking Competition

Always a popular meeting, with three students presenting a timed oration on a chosen subject using the principles of the Rotary Four Way Test. 

Grace Messenger loves playing a wide range of competitive sports including netball, softball, hockey and recently represented the College in the Catholic Schoolgirls AFL grand final. Her favourite subjects at school include Sport and English. When she leaves school, she is hoping to work in an area that will help people to improve their health and fitness. She will speak on ‘The importance of promoting universal education for girls’.

Madeline Roberts participates in a wide range of community and school activities including hockey; running; surf lifesaving; choir; playing violin in school orchestra as well as acting and singing in school productions. She is considering a number of different career options, ch as architecture and paediatrics. Her topic is ‘Reducing our dependence one-use plastics’.

Ellen Van Beek is involved in cultural activities such as Select Choir and College musical theatre productions and also competes in trampolining at a high level, hoping to be involved in Nationals next year. At school, she loves Science, Textiles, Drama and Maths. She is hoping for a career in either Physiotherapy or Speech Therapy. Her topic for her speech is ‘Closing the Gap’.


Four Way Test Speaking Contest
The Rotary Four Way Test speaking contest is part of the School Link Program, originated by PDG Fred Marsh in his year as Governor [1988-89] this public speaking competition was first held at the District Conference in March 1989.
The Rotary Four Way Test encourages teachers and students from each club’s link school to take part in this opportunity for public speaking, confidence building and ethics consideration. The Rotary Four Way Test is a state-wide competition with a State final being conducted in conjunction with fellow Western Australian District 9465.

Aims
The aims of the competition are to:
1. bring the concepts of the Rotary Four-Way Test to the attention of students.
2. provide students with an opportunity to compete in a public speaking competition
3. provide Rotary and the Rotary Four-Way Test with valuable exposure in the community.
4. develop relationships between Rotary and schools.

Eligibility
Year 10 students in any high school or college in District 9455 applying through a Rotary Club. Students selected from club heats will participate in the district final and state final.
Any topic may be chosen but the participants must address and refer to the Rotary Four Way Test in their speech and focus on the four elements.

Prizes
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the club heats with perpetual trophies awarded at the district final and the state final.
