ROTARY OF PERTH PRESIDENT UPDATE - 13TH MARCH 2018
If you haven’t noticed the recurring theme of our projects, I’d encourage you read through this week’s bulletin and more importantly, to RSVP to attend one or more events! Last weekend the Rotaract Club of Perth put on a fantastic masquerade ball where over 185+ people enjoyed a fantastic gathering celebrating the work of the Perth Homeless Support Group, a grass roots movement aimed at providing basic essentials and services to some of our city’s most needing persons. Just on ticket sales alone, over $10,000 was raised to support this group…the numbers are still coming in for the auction items. Well done to Renu Pantula, the Rotaract President and her team for putting together such a great fund raising event.
Thanks also to the “Rotars”…the Ashleys x2, Bodi Ledwij and Stephanie Sim (the new Michelles), and Brendan Watson for their continued service through the contribution of time and music! There is no doubt that having a live band adds class to any event! Working behind the scenes, Jill Dawson again added that magical touch and assisted our Rotaractors achieve a fantastic result. We do thank Peter Dawson for “allowing” the club to have Jill’s time and services. We hope he enjoyed the night as no doubt, Douglas and Naomi Bellworthy and Minh Dang did!
Speaking of homelessness charity events…
Two more to highlight where we need you support:
1. One in a Million (OIAM) Dinner. This joint event with the Rotary Club of Crawley is in need of AUCTION ITEMS! I’ve heard we have a few wine enthusiasts in the club? How about a special bottle or two you can contribute to help boost the offerings for the silent auction? Or, perhaps you might look to offer money, drinks, or a catering package which can be used towards the purchase of food and beverages to add to the generous offering of Capt Larry’s four hour cruise aboard Feline? Of course, we look forward to your attendance as well!

2. Stitches of Hope Sleeping Bag Project. Stage 2 of this project is now launched. Please visit: https://startsomegood.com/the-sleeping-bag-project to donate now! If you recall from our earlier notices, if you previously made a gift to this project, we were unfortunately unable to debit you’re your credit card as we set our pledge bar just a bit too high! We have since made the adjustment and now are seeking all previous donors along with new donors to get behind this campaign.This sleeping bag project is what we are calling a ‘boomerang’ project. The sleeping bags are sewn by Cambodian women from a sewing centre established by Stitches of Hope Foundation (a NFP chaired by the current President, Kay Eva, of the Rotary Club of Swan Districts). In Mid April, these sleeping bags will be shipped to Fremantle (courtesy of a transport company – pro bono). From there, these 500 sleeping bags will be distributed to those in need via agencies such as our very Passages Resource Centre.
Our aim is to “sell” 500 sleeping bags at $50 a bag to cover our costs for materials, sewing, and seed monies for next year’s batch. This project represents a joint project between two clubs (metro and semi-regional), benefitting both the local and international communities, addressing two of the six of Rotary’s key areas of focus (economic & community development and maternal and child health), and was seeded by our club’s and RC Swan District’s initial investment along with a District grant!
So if you haven’t already supported this project…I encourage you to Take Action and do so now!
HHG’s Cocktails for a Cause. Did you get the email this has been postponed until May 4th, 2018? If you did, then good on you for booking! If not, this is just a note to let you know that you still have time to book for the event which will occur on May 4th! This charity event supports HHG, our corporate partner, and their work in support of Hagar Australia who in turn works to support vulnerable women and children in Cambodia.
The OFFICE MOVE. After a year + of efforts to negotiate, plan, and coordinate, the move is finally happening this weekend and we need your help this Saturday…17 March 2018. From 8.00 am – 12.00 pm. Our task is to move the contents of our office from Level 1 to Level 5 via the lift! Please bring a hand truck if you’ve got one along with a few strong sons, daughters, grandsons or even granddaughters! We are not picky! There are a few tasks to sort through and all are welcome. Even if you can stop buy for an hour that will be greatly appreciated! If we don’t get enough help, our land lord who’s been extremely patient with us will be very grumpy!
Lastly, please again read through the bulletin and commit to attending at least one or two of the club events in the coming few weeks. Our members put in a tremendous amount of effort into these events which benefit our community and ultimately our club. With the “kudos” our club receives, we are empowered to continue to serve…let’s keep the cycle going for our next generation of community leaders.
