ROTARY “BLITZ” TRANSFORMS SALVO’S REFUGE

30-Apr-2013

A run down courtyard and overgrown gardens within the Salvation Army’s Perth women’s refuge have been transformed into a picturesque, landscaped retreat - thanks to a special “backyard blitz” organized by the Rotary Club of Perth.

In a two-day makeover the team of 50 volunteers, including members from five Rotary Clubs and Perth Rotaract, built a new gazebo, benches and bridges, planted shrubs, laid paving stones, erected two big shade sails and installed a children’s sand pit.

“The refuge provides shelter to hundreds of Perth women and their children, many of them victims of terrible domestic abuse,” said Perth Rotary Club President Nigel Barker.

“We wanted to assist the Salvos by providing a peaceful environment where women and their kids could spend time out in the gardens to start the healing process.

“Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and the generosity of Bunnings and other firms in donating thousands of dollars worth of materials and tools we were able to give the courtyard and gardens a fantastic face lift.”

Shelter manager, Major Margaret MacDonald, said that because of the wonderful work organized by the Perth Rotary Club an area of the centre has been rejuvenated creating a beautiful and tranquil location for residents.

It has already created a sense of excitement with children and impacted on those who are at a very vulnerable and sensitive time of their lives, she said.

We are so grateful for the clubs support and commitment to service to our community."

The Perth Rotary Club has worked tirelessly over the last 12 months developing initiatives to help the Salvos cope with the increasing numbers of women and children seeking shelter at the refuge, originally built in 1898.

One of these, Path of Hope, is aiming to break the cycle of domestic violence by empowering women with confidence and self esteem so they have a better chance of raising their children away from the destructive influences of domestic violence.

We want to provide support and advocacy to women and children who have recently left refuge accommodation in order to help them to re-establish their safety and independence in the community, said Mr Barker.

“Our aim is to make this an international initiative for Rotary clubs throughout the world.”
