"How to not say the wrong thing" - Tips on supporting each other in the workplace

With RU OK Day coming up on 8th September, it is timely to join us and hear from Mike Waine. His “How to not say the wrong thing” has been developed to assist businesses with mental health conversations within their organisation. We aim to arm employers and employees with the tools they need to best support each other.

Many people want to be able to offer a supportive ear or shoulder if someone is struggling but feels underprepared and worried they will say the wrong thing. Being a mental health support person is about being available to listen and then helping the other person find professional support when needed.

The aim of this Check-in is to allow people to feel comfortable and confident to have conversations in the workplace about mental health while maintaining their own boundaries. Empowering leaders and co-workers to support each other.

Mike is a qualified registered psychologist with experience in running therapeutic groups and one on one therapy. He is trained in Schema Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Strengths-based approaches, and has experience in EMDR.  He considers his style integrative, melding multiple traditional approaches with metaphor and analogies, and a touch of irreverence.

Mike believes in breaking stereotypes as much as possible. He is a father, husband, son, and grandson; is a member of a social motorcycle group dedicated to putting a smile on children’s faces; and is a self-described “geek”. This geekery has been applied to psychological principles, his environment, and makes up a large proportion of his downtime.

Qualifications: BSocSc ,BSocSc (Hons), BA (Hons) in Psychology.
