Reporting on Health in WA

Cathy O'Leary will discuss how health reporting in the media has radically changed over the 30-plus years that she has been working as a journalist.

Cathy is considered Western Australia’s most experienced and awarded health journalist, starting her career at The West Australian newspaper in 1985.

She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Curtin University, majoring in journalism, and has worked as a part-time lecturer and tutor at three universities, as well as acting as a mentor for public health and science students.

At the 2018 WA Media Awards she was presented with the prestigious Clarion Award for the most outstanding contribution to journalism in the State.

After serving as The West Australian’s Medical Editor for 15 years, she left in 2019 and is now Managing Editor at Medical Forum magazine, a specialist health publication.
