Dear Rotarians and Friends,

While the Autumn air is beginning to cool, activity at Perth Rotary is certainly heating up!

We enjoyed a fabulous meeting on Friday, 10 April, as we celebrated the birthdays of two of our most esteemed and highly regarded members, Mr Ken Michael AC and Mr John Garland AM.  It was an especially momentous day for John, who celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by family and friends.

Following last week's celebrations, Dr. David Mountain provided a sobering insight into our public health system. His presentation, "Are We in a Healthy State?", was a powerful reminder of the resilience required by our healthcare workers, who perform under immense pressure to care for us all.

Let’s keep our momentum strong—remember to keep the first and third Fridays free for our upcoming projects.

I would like to put forward my apologies for this Friday’s luncheon, as I will be traveling to Mooloolaba, Queensland, to spend some time with friends.  However, Perth Rotary will be in the very capable hands of Past President Wesley Sim.  It will be a significant meeting as we pause to remember our ANZACs and honour those currently working to keep us safe. We also look forward to a very special moment as we officially welcome our two newest Rotarians, Rohini and Diego Modgill.

Birthday Celebrations | John and Ken

1987 must have been a remarkable year for the Perth Rotary Club as we welcomed Ken Michael (6 March 87); Ted Wilhelm (13 March 87) and John Garland (10 April 87) as members.   It was a joy to celebrate Ken and John at our last meeting as they celebrated their respective birthdays in the month of April.   We are privileged to have such fine examples of what it is to be a Rotarian in our midst and whilst we wish both Ken and John the happiest of days, we also pay tribute to their families and thank them for enabling Ken and John to be such huge contributors to our club over the years.   Long may it continue.

However, It's not just Perth Rotary Members who celebrate their birthday in April, but also the founding member of Rotary International Paul Harris.  His birthday was yesterday - Sunday 19 April.  Members can read up a little more about Paul Harris by clicking on this link

Perth Rotary Board | Strategic Planning

Our strategic planning began at the March Board meeting with an initial session facilitated by Rotarian Ian Belton. During this meeting, the Board conducted a SWOT analysis and reviewed the current state of the Club using the "Six Thinking Hats" method.  Building on that foundation, the Board dedicated a full day on Friday, 10 April, to setting our strategic goals beyond our Centenary Year. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Ian for his expert facilitation of this productive session.

Our agenda for the day included:
    • Building a High-Functioning Team: Focus on establishing trust, functional dynamics, HAIL, and the Six Thinking Hats.
    • Agreed Goals: Defining objectives for the current session and the year ahead.
    • Strategy Development: Utilizing a cascading framework to define our winning aspirations, focus areas, and necessary capabilities and systems.
A highlight of the day was the involvement of our RYE Student Elliot who brought a fresh and youthful lens to our discussion points.  Elliot enjoyed the day immensely and was an enthusiastic contributor to the session.

LIFT THE LID WALK | Saturday 18 April 2026

Through Australian Rotary Health (ARH), we remain a leading force in addressing the mental health challenges facing our families—particularly our youth, who are now twice as likely to experience these struggles.

Last Saturday, Perth Rotarians joined District 9423 for a "fast-paced" walk through the UWA grounds. The event was a resounding success, raising $8,767 for ARH research, with Perth Rotary contributing $1,150 to that total.

Our Sincere Thanks: Thank you to all who walked or donated. A special mention to Dr. David Preece for his tireless professional and personal commitment to raising awareness for the mental health of our teens and pre-teens.   Final Call: Donations remain open until this Saturday. Please help us continue this vital work.

PERTH ROTARY | FELLOWSHIP DATES for your diary....

Friday 19 June 2026 |              Century of Service: The Legacy Lunch

SCHOOL IS OUT FOR OUR RYE STUDENT

Elliot has enjoyed some well-deserved R&R over the past two weeks, embracing a slightly slower pace of life during the school holidays. We recently spent a few hours at the Outta Bounds Golf complex hitting some balls before taking on the 3-par course. I have to report that HE BEAT ME!!!!  (Cue absolute jubilation for Elliot and a very "sad face" for me).

The adventure continues as Elliot has now joined his fellow Inbound RYE students for a three-week Safari through the Pilbara and Mid West regions. This will be a true Western Australian experience: overnighting at a station bush camp, hiking through the spectacular gorges of Karijini National Park, and visiting everything from Tom Price to Coral Bay. We hope he gets the chance to swim with the whale sharks and meet the dolphins at Monkey Mia!

I have no doubt the vast landscapes and iconic red dirt will leave a lasting impression on him—and his clothes—before he returns to his host family, Kathryn and Andrew Wackett.

As Elliot’s time in Australia is rapidly drawing to a close, this is a wonderful window for Rotarians to help make his final weeks memorable. If you have an opportunity to include him in a day trip or a weekend outing, please reach out. He is wonderful company, genuinely interested in our country, and an outstanding ambassador for the Youth Exchange Program... just don't let him know I said that!
