Members & Friends of the Perth Rotary Club,

What a week it has been in Perth Rotary – It never ceases to amaze me how much energy is generated from one organisation.  Your time, efforts and service above self are greatly valued and appreciated by the Perth Rotary Board and the many charitable entities who benefit.

Please note, this week is a “Week of Action and Service Above Self” for the Perth Rotary Club and therefore there is no formal lunch meeting on Friday 31 July 2020.

Last Friday we welcomed District Governor Jon Bilson to the club so he could outline his vision for the year ahead. DG Jon touched on goals for us to aim for at club level, district level and global level as well as celebrating the centenary of Rotary in Australia.  DG Jon then went on to engage members with a survey utilising our phones with the data immediately coming up on screen.

It was pleasing to see the strong links between our projects, club culture and values reflected in a positive way and up in lights.  In many ways it was a valuable glimpse of our club and directly links to the current review of our Club Strategic Plan being undertaken by Emma Cork.  Emma will present the strategic plan review and recommendations to members for comment at our Club AGM, scheduled for Friday 16 October 2020.  The AGM will be a lunch meeting and I would appreciate it, if all club members could place this important club date into their diaries now.

It was also an opportunity for us to welcome Tara Sherwood, President of the Perth Rotaract Club along with members Shu-Wei Kho, Jonathan Luu and Madi Smith.  We look forward to Perth Rotaract joining us at our monthly After Business Drinks and ask members to make them feel welcome, get to know them as we look forward to forging a closer relationship with these future Rotarians of the World.

We also Welcomed Darren Lomman, founder of Greenbatch as a Corporate Member of the Perth Rotary Club.  Last Saturday a small group of Perth members spent time at Greenbatch sorting lids for a special project to be announced in conjunction with the launch of the much anticipated container deposit scheme on 1st October 2020.

I would like to thank Jurgen Baumhoff, Barbara and son Alex, Darren Perera and son Kai and Fred Cork and son Noah for spending time supporting our newest corporate member, Greenbatch.  Darren took us on an impromptu tour of the facility where we were able to see the latest addition of Western Australia's first PET reprocessing plant.  Greenbatch can now process 500kg of plastic per hour and are working towards increasing this to 5000kg per hour.   There will be many more volunteer opportunities at Greenbatch and I encourage and welcome members to get involved. Please find more information about Darren and Greenbatch at the end of this bulletin.

This week we have our first Vocational Visit for 2020/21 to the Nyoongar Outreach Centre.  I would especially like to thank Lachlan Ottley for introducing Maria McAtackney to the club and Vocational Services Director Jonas Edner for facilitating the visit.  We meet 10.30am this Friday at the Centre and will follow with an informal lunch at the Brisbane Hotel immediately following the vocational visit.  Should you have any queries in relation to his event please do not hesitate to contact Jonas direct via email – vocational@rotaryperth.org.au .  Spaces are limited and as such members were requested to pre-book via paperless post.  I understand we are at capacity.  Our next “Week of Action and Service Above Self” date will be Friday 30 October 2020.

We next meet at The Westin Hotel for lunch on Friday 7th August 2020.  This meeting is shaping up to be a very special event, a celebration of the “Life of Bryan, 90 years of Service”,  and requires members to go on line at www.trybooking.com/BKKTC to secure their ticket.

We recognise that the scale and nature of many of the community projects undertaken by Perth Rotary provides a natural synergy for Rotary and Corporate Members.  We are so very proud of the legacy our former members have created and we are determined to continue to work for our community and to take this opportunity acknowledge and thank not only Bryan Mickle but all past members of the Perth Rotary Club for their endeavours over the past ninety four years.

Past President John Garland AM on behalf of club members will be presenting an overview of PP Bryan Mickles’ contribution to Perth Rotary and Rotary International during his lifetime as part of Perth Rotary’s, R100 Centennial Celebration.

Our next Perth Rotary Board meeting is Monday 3 August 2020.  Should you have any concerns or matters you would like the board to consider, please do not hesitate to contact a board member or myself direct.  Our email addresses are below:
