Members & Friends of the Perth Rotary Club,

What a difference a week can make.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all those currently battling fires in the Shires of Mundaring, Chittering, Northam and City of Swan. The loss of homes is devastating and Perth Rotary Board Members are monitoring the situation to see how and when we may be of service to the community.  We have been in contact with our members who reside in these Shires and to the best of our knowledge, all are currently safe and working within their communities to help fight the fire and/or keep their homes and family's safe.

In the meantime, the rest of our Metropolitan and South West Region remains in lockdown whilst state health authorities work to ensure that the community transfer of the COVID19 (UK Strain), virus is contained to just the one person.  Should any member of our club and/or community require assistance during these trying times, please do not hesitate to reach out to us for assistance.

It is also with a great deal of sadness that I inform members that Past President and Honorary member of the Perth Rotary Club, Harry Morgan AM passed away 27 January 2021 aged 91 years.

“Harry was inducted in to the Rotary Club of Perth on 16 Jan 1970.  As well as being a past president of the club and a dual Paul Harris Fellow recipient, Harry served on several committees including the Northbridge Markets Project.  He had worked in the fruit and vegetable industry most of his life and was an icon of the Canningvale Markets.  Harry was a Commander of the Royal Order of the Polar Star – First Class (a Swedish Knighthood) for his continuing services as Honorary Consul of Sweden for WA, a past President of the East Fremantle Football Club and the WA Football Commission.  He was often appointed as a Commissioner to Local Government and was a Perth City Councillor for some time.  Harry was president of the Royal Flying Doctor Service WA Section, Australian Councillor and past chairman of the Horticultural Produce Commission of WA. His wife Gladys predeceased him a couple of years ago.  Harry leaves a daughter and four sons along with their families and 12 grandchildren”.    PP D Reed AO.

On behalf of all members, we extend our sincere condolences to Harry’s family.  PP David Reed placed a notice in the West Australian on behalf of the club.  Details of the funeral service will be emailed to members separately.

MORGAN (HARRY) AM In memory of our past President, one of the most influential and respected members for over 50 years of the Rotary Club of Perth. Our deepest condolences to his family. Jill Dawson, President of the Rotary Club of Perth.

We were extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to visit the WA Police Academy last Friday as part of our Vocational Visit Program for 2020/21 to understand more about how they train Police Officers.  Sincere thanks to Sgt Craig Coburn, Rotarian Rebecca Tolstoy AM and Vocational Services Director Jonas Edner for facilitating this opportunity for our club.  More details of the visit to come once approved by the WA Police Academy for publication.

Unfortunately, our Presidents Cocktail Party this Friday, had to be postponed due to the Metropolitan lockdown this week.  We are currently working with the Crystal Club and Crown Towers to secure another date, most likely in March.  I will update all ticket holders of the rescheduled date as soon as practical.  If for any reason, you are no longer able to attend once the revised date is announced, a full refund of your ticket can be arranged.

On the other hand, If you do not currently have a ticket to attend, but would now like to join us, please email Jo Morris, Chair of our Fellowship Program (fellowship@rotaryperth.org.au) and we will create a wait list.  The event was sold out; however, we will work to accommodate any additional attendees.

Thank you for your understanding in relation to the rescheduling of the President's Cocktail Party.  It is sure to be a "cracker" of a Party when we get to it.

At this stage, (assuming we emerge from lockdown 6pm, Friday 5 February), we will kick the year off at the newly revamped Parmelia Hilton Hotel, Mill Street Perth with a celebration of the Chinese New Year.  We ask members to go on line and purchase tickets to this event via trybooking – www.trybooking.com/BNOMU  In the event we need to re-schedule, we can easily refund the tickets, however it greatly assists us with planning to have tickets pre-purchased, particularly in the current climate.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

Rotary International 2021/22 President, Shekhar Mehta announced his 2021/22 presidential theme – Serve to Change Lives.  The full press release is below for your reading.  Serving others in our community continues to be the greatest reward for all Rotarians throughout the world.  Rotarians are people of action, creating positive change within our communities whilst enjoying opportunities to network and mentor within our professional networks.  A privilege to be a part of.

Friday 23 April 2021   Members of the Perth Rotary Club have been collaborating with the Melville Rotary Club on behalf of District 9455 and 9465 to create an event worthy of celebrating the Centenary of Rotary in Australia.  It is with a great deal of excitement that we can announce on behalf of DG Jon Bilson and DG Colin Burns, Rotary WA will host the Rotary Centennial Gala Ball, Friday 23rd  April 2021 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.

The Theme is “Puttin on the Ritz” and we look forward to a large contingent from the Perth Rotary Club at this event.  As this is a Western Australia wide event, and numbers are limited, we urge you to book your tickets asap via the try booking link below.  This also helps to alleviate the financial pressures associated with hosting such an event and your cooperation in this regard is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.
