Laos Water & Sanitation Project

If you were told that 50% of the children in your village would die of dysentery before the age of 5, what would be your highest priority?

Clean water and sanitation are fundamental to healthy living. In village Laos where many families contend with unexploded bombs on a daily basis, the basics are often overlooked in this poor country.

The Rotary Club of Perth in conjunction with clubs from WA and NSW have joined forces for the Laos Project to make a real difference  to child health and to develop a sustainable future for rural Laos.

Based in Phoukood District, the capitol of Xiang Khouang Province the project will work towards the provision of clean water and sanitation to a total of 9 villages over the next three years. WA Rotary clubs have agreed to take 3 of the 9 villages proposed.

The village headmen agreed that there were three main objectives to help reduce infant mortality:

  • Clean water supply
  • Toilets and training in sanitation
  • Set up a framework to provide practical skills for community economic development

Water & Sanitation

A clean water supply is the most important, as dysentery and diarrhea caused by drinking dirty water accounts for 50% of child deaths before the age of 5.

The clean water source is in the mountains at least 1.5km each way  from the village and getting adequate supplies is hard work. This leads to the reuse the contaminated water, as it is an easier solution .

The provision of  toilets and education on sanitation will allow villagers a greater understanding of how to prevent contamination and greatly reduce the infant mortality rate.

 Sustainable Economic Development

An economic farm development has been created by the Mines Victims and Clearance Trust (MiVAC) to trial different sustainable farming options:

Mushroom Farm
Producing 2 kg a day from a few bags of sawdust and sand mixture.

Fish Farm
Currently in development, there is little expertise in starting this; however there is hope for the future.

Pineapple Trial
A successful trial  will lead to implementation and develop trade.

Bee Keeping
A trial  is planned to asses viability of honey production in Laos.
